5 Day to Day Care Tips for Your Catheter
Using a catheter may feel difficult and time consuming at the beginning, but with a few catheter day care tips, you’ll find the process gets easier and easier and you will be an expert in no time.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly. This step can not be skipped. Wash or sanitize your hands and then do not touch anything other than your sterile supplies. If you touch something else like the toilet seat or door knob, keep a hand sanitizer nearby to re-sanitize quickly. Wash your hands again after you have inserted the catheter.
- Keep all of your supplies handy and nearby.
- Use a handheld mirror to help find the urethral opening. As time goes by, you will find a mirror may not be necessary.
- Use enough lubricant to make the insertion more comfortable. If you find you are experiencing discomfort, add additional lubricant and try to relax all of your muscles. When you are tense, more discomfort will occur. If you continue to experience discomfort, talk to your doctor about alternative devices.
- If you are experiencing leakage, you may need to adjust the diameter and length of the catheter. The supplier or your doctor may be able to help determine which adjustments should be made.
