Quadriplegic artist paints with her mouth

Paige Crouch was handed a life she never imagined. But with each stroke of her brush, she's creating the life she wants.
Crouch was dealt a tough hand.  After a car accident in 1987, she was left paralyzed. “I knew something was terribly wrong when I couldn't move. I don't think anybody thinks, ‘I'm paralyzed,'” Crouch said.  She was, but she's continued to be positive. In fact, her positivity led to something that will amaze you. Crouch loves to paint. And because she's quadriplegic, she holds the brush in her mouth. She says she had some lessons at first, but she's largely self-taught.

“With every painting, I've got elements that I don't like and elements that I love. So you learn from each one.”

Her husband, Steve provides assistance.  For the most part, Crouch says painting is something she can do alone, and she gets a lot of satisfaction from it. Family and friends have been there to help her on difficult days.

“A turning point for me was in the ICU, and I heard the term quadriplegic. I knew that was me. I felt like I had a label put on me that was so negative.”
Painting helps keep Crouch positive, and helps her get into what she calls a “zen” mode. While she paints, she often listens to classic rock. Eric Clapton is a favorite.

Crouch has joined a company called Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, which is comprised of 800 artists in 75 different countries. A scholarship pays for her supplies. The company sells greeting cards and her original paintings, too.
